Trump Target Letter

Trump Says He Has Been Notified He Is a Target of Special Counsel Probe

Former President Says He Expects to Be Indicted in Probe of 2020 Election Interference

Letter Cites Three Statutes That Could Be Applied in Prosecution

WASHINGTON - Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has been notified that he is a target of a criminal investigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith. In a statement released by his office, Trump said that he had received a "target letter" from Smith's team indicating that he is being investigated for possible violations of three statutes related to the 2020 election. The statutes cited in the target letter are: * 18 U.S. Code § 1512(c)(2), which prohibits obstruction of an official proceeding * 18 U.S. Code § 2383, which prohibits inciting, assisting, or participating in a civil disorder * 18 U.S. Code § 241, which prohibits conspiracy to commit a crime Trump said in his statement that he believes he is being targeted for political reasons and that he is confident that he will be exonerated. "This is a continuation of the greatest witch hunt in American history," Trump said. "I have done nothing wrong, and I will not be intimidated by these tactics." The announcement that Trump is a target of the special counsel investigation marks a significant development in the ongoing probe into the events of January 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The special counsel investigation is being conducted by Smith, a veteran prosecutor who was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022. Smith is tasked with investigating both the January 6 attack and Trump's efforts to overturn the election results. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed against Trump or any other individuals.
