Norovirus Outbreaks Surge on Cruise Ships

Highest Number of Cases Since 2012

13 Outbreaks on Cruise Ships in 2023

Cruise ships are facing a surge in norovirus outbreaks, with the highest number of cases since 2012. So far this year, there have been 13 outbreaks on cruise ships, including a recent outbreak on the Diamond Princess that left 158 passengers and crew ill.

All samples tested positive for norovirus genotype II. The ship was sailing to a US port when the outbreak occurred. The CDC is investigating the outbreak and has not yet determined the source of the infection.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. It is spread through contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces. Symptoms usually develop within 12-48 hours of exposure to the virus.

There is no specific treatment for norovirus. Most people recover within a few days. However, the virus can be dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and young children.

Cruise ships are a common source of norovirus outbreaks. The close quarters and shared spaces on cruise ships make it easy for the virus to spread. Cruise ship companies are taking steps to prevent norovirus outbreaks, such as increasing cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and providing hand sanitizer for passengers and crew.
