8 May: A Day of Liberation and Victory in Europe
Different Historical Significance
The date of May 8th holds different historical significance in various countries. In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), it was celebrated as the Day of Liberation from Fascism and was even a legal holiday. In contrast, in West Germany, the day was treated differently, and its significance has been debated for decades.
VE-Day in the West
In the United States and three Commonwealth countries - the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia - the day is known as VE-Day (Victory in Europe Day). It marks the end of World War II in Europe, which was celebrated on May 8th, 1945.
A Long-Overdue Recognition
German historian Martin Sabrow believes that making May 8th a regular holiday in Germany is long overdue. He views it as a way to anchor the day as a lasting symbol of liberation and victory.
