Ground Source Heat Pumps: A Sustainable Alternative

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are gaining popularity as a sustainable and efficient way to heat and cool homes. Unlike traditional HVAC systems that rely on fossil fuels, GSHPs use the Earth's constant temperature to provide both heating and cooling, significantly reducing energy consumption.

How Do GSHPs Work?

GSHPs consist of a loop of pipes buried underground, where the Earth's temperature remains relatively stable throughout the year. In the winter, the loop absorbs heat from the ground and transfers it into the home. In the summer, the process is reversed, with heat from the home being transferred to the ground.

The efficiency of GSHPs is measured by their coefficient of performance (COP), which compares the amount of heat or cooling produced to the amount of energy consumed. GSHPs typically have a COP of 3 to 4, meaning that for every unit of energy used, they produce 3 to 4 units of heating or cooling.
